Mumbai, Sept. 8 – Among the various pertinent decisions arrived at during the 129th meeting held by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Region (MMRDA), the one stood out on top was to spare rupees 1,113 crores for road widening and flyovers in the metropolitan region. The project includes construction of five flyovers – two in Kalyan at Rajnoli Junction and Mankoli Junction, one in Bhiwandi at Vanjarpatti and two in Thane at Mumbra Junction and Shil Phata. The project will also undertake quadrupling of Arnala-Virar-Kaner-Shirsad-Ambadi State Road and Padgha-Vishind road; Kalyan-Badlapur-Karjat-Hal Phata State Road and Karjat to Chowk State Road. The State Roads from Katai Naka to Badlapur and NH 8 to Nalasopara-Nirmal will also be developed and widened under the project.
“Easier and faster connectivity is only crucial for the overall development of any region and the metropolitan region deserves the same as much as the city of Mumbai”, said Mr.Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister and Chairman, MMRDA, on concluding the meeting. “This area is identified as a growth center and to give it its due recognition we need to put in all the efforts as far as road connectivity is concerned”, said the Chief Minister further.
More significantly, objections and suggestions have also been invited by the Authority for the development plan for 27 villages in Kalyan and Ambernath Talukas and 60 villages in Bhiwandi Taluka in Thane District. This area is busy with activities related to commerce, industry and warehousing. The effort is to transform this area into a growth center.
The Authority has further decided to hold public consultation programme as far as the development of Uttan-Gorai-Manori area as a tourist destination concerned. “We have considered various facets such as environmental sensitivity, tourism potential, seashores, hilly areas, mangroves, water bodies etc. However, before finalizing such crucial plans participation of locals and sustaining their livelihood cannot be lost sight of”, said Mr. Chavan further.
The Authority has also approved installation of noise barriers on all the roads and flyovers constructed by MMRDA. The decision was arrived at in the wake of the successful installation of noise barriers in the Bandra-Kurla Complex recently where noise pollution has been reduced up to 60 decibels from 75 decibels. “The study has indicated that noise pollution can affect one’s concentration, brings down creativity and also cause internal strife resulting in blood pressure like ailments. And with the swelling number of vehicles such precautionary measures become obligatory”, said Mr.Chavan.
The Authority formally accorded the implementation of Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link Project (MTHL) on Public-Private basis to MMRDA.
The meeting was attended by Mayor of Mumbai Smt. Shraddha Jadhav, MLA Nabab Malik, MLA Prashant Thakur, Corporater Aashish Shelar, Rajhans Sinh, Thane ZP President Kapil Patil, Mayor of KDMC Vaijayanti Gujar-Gholap, Mayor of Khopoli Noorjahan Shaikh, Chief Secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA Rahul Asthana, Commissioner MCGB Subodhkumar and may senior officers.

Is it true?
