MMRDA presents Rs.4,825-crore Budget
Road network, Metro and Mono Rail projects receive boost
Mumbai, March 6, 2012 – The Honourable Chief Minister and Chairman, MMRDA, Mr.Prithviraj Chavan, during the 130th Authority meeting, held today, approved Rs.4,825-crore budget for the year 2012-13 presented by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The budget affords Rs.1,460-crore boost to road network, Rs.870-crore for the Mono Rail Project, Rs.338-crore for Metro Rail Project and Rs.390-crore fillip to development of water resources in metropolitan region.
The Authority has allocated Rs.660 crores for the Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project The allocation is to facilitate faster completion of Eastern Freeway, Anik-Panjarpol Link Road, Panjarpol-Ghatkopar Link Road, Rail Over Bridge at Milan and the Sahar Elevated Road which are expected to be completed this year.
The Authority has allocated Rs.800 crores for the Extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project which is being implemented for the city’s metropolitan region. Various roads, flyovers and creek bridges are being constructed in the metropolitan region and the allocation will help these projects complete as per the schedule. Under this Extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project nine various roads in Vasai, Virar, Mira Road, Bhayendar, Dombivli, Kalyan, Ambarnath, Karjat and Badlapur are being developed. Similarly, six flyovers are also under construction in these areas including Thane along with a rail over bridge on Thane-Belapur Road.
The crucial 22-km Mumbai Trans Harbour Link has received a very encouraging response from Indian and International players and the RFQ process will be completed this month. The Rs.8,800-crore project is expected to be awarded by November 2012.
The other critical project for the improvement of transport facilities to and from the city is the 126-km long Multi-Modal corridor which will run from Virar (Navghar) to Alibaug. The corridor is being implemented in two phases – from Virar (Navghar) to Chirner (79 k.m.) and Chirner to Alibaug (47 k.m.). The Authority has already finalized preliminary plans through techno-economic feasibility study and the same are being included in the Regional Transport Road Map. The Rs.9,326-crore corridor will – besides the main traffic lanes – have dedicated lanes for buses, two-wheelers and non motorized transport. The Authority has spared Rs.50 crores for the project this financial year.
The Rs.873-crore push for the Mono Rail Project in the next budget clearly indicates Authority’s intent. With the Mono Rail being successfully tested on a regular basis and construction of most of the stations at an advance stage, this financial spur should raise Mumbaikars’ hope.
The Mumbai Metro Rail and the Mumbai Mono Rail projects have always been on the top priority list for the MMRDA. The Authority has spared Rs.338 crores of which Rs.100 crores are allocated for the completion of Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro corridor, Rs.138 crores for the Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd Metro corridor and Rs.100 crores for the Colaba-BKC-Seepz Metro corridor. The corridor has received momentum after the Centre has started appraisal of the project. The Detailed Project Report for the corridor is ready and the appointment of interim consultants, agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency for loan, invitation to global players for bids and selection of the best bidder and beginning the construction are the key areas the Authority will be looking forward to in the ensuing financial year.
The budget allocation of Rs. 290 crores for the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-II (MUTP-II) is for the betterment of the suburban rail system. The development of 5th and 6th line between CST to Kurla, providing additional line from Thane to Diva, 6th line from Mumbai Central to Borivali, extension of Harbour line from Andheri to Goregaon are few of the key projects that will remain the focus of the project.
The Authority has also made provisions for other key projects such as Mithi River Development (Rs.82 crores), Resettlement and Rehabilitation (Rs.65 crores), Development Centers in MMR (Rs.50 crores), Development and provision of civic amenities in BKC (Rs.55 crores), Wadala Truck Terminus (Rs.50 crores), provision of noise barriers (Rs.37 crores) etc.
